NEW BERN, N.C. — Heron Hospitality Chief Operating Officer Gary Curry provided the Craven County Tourism Development Authority with an update on the highly anticipated project, The Harvey, at February’s board meeting.
Mechanical and electrical construction are complete as part of phase one. Exterior and interior work on the building has commenced. Under Heron’s stewardship, The Harvey is being revitalized as a boutique hotel with an expected opening later in 2023. Guests can expect four private balconies, luxury furnishings, a relaxing, enclosed courtyard,
and all of today’s modern conveniences.
ABOUT THE HARVEY MANSION
The Harvey Mansion is an historic building located in New Bern, North Carolina. It was originally built by John Harvey in approximately 1797. In 1971, the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The property is among the oldest of New Bern’s surviving brick structures and contains unusually elaborate interior woodwork, including typical New Bern “wave” stair brackets, paneled wainscot, and Adamesque mantels. Especially notable is the drawing room, one of New Bern’s most elegantly finished rooms of the period, highlighted by a mantel with composition ornaments and carving.
VISITOR IMPACT
Statistics from the Craven County Tourism Development Authority stated that domestic and international visitors to and from Craven County spent $160 million in 2021. The top states of origin showed that visitors were coming from Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida. The Harvey will preserve the history of New Bern, while meeting the growing demand for accommodations.
